Early
Life Michael Collin Showery was born to a blue collar Irish
Catholic Family from the mean streets of South Boston Massachusetts. He
was one of seven brothers, the Fighting Showery's as they were called, and
was known around much of the close knit Irish community of Southie.
At the Age of 11 Mickey Showery would have his first run in with
the law. A member of the youth street gang, The Ducky Boys, Showery was
taken in a handful of "Snatch and Grab" style robberies of local street
vendors.
Although regarded as a good kid my many it was obvious
Mickey Showery would need the help of a kind soul to give his spirit
direction. He would find that through Pride, Community, and like much of
South Boston, The Church. Namely, a priest by the name of Father Samuel
O'Donald.
Boxing Career
Father O'Donald, a Vietnam
Era Navy Chaplain and Golden Gloves Boxer, took Mickey under his wing and
would teach him to use his skills and gifts in a sanctioned ring of Rules
and Technique and not the grimy back alley Streets.
Under the
tutoring of O'Donald, Mickey Showery quickly climbed the ranks of Amateur
Boxing developing quite a strong following and winning record to match. He
would come to be known as The Southie Saint, having be regards as much by
the community and also having the kind of talent that looked to be handed
down to him from the almighty.
Demons and Departure from Boxing
Mickey Showery had always been somewhat of a thorn in the side
of promoters. His fast paced lifestyle and controversial nights spent in
the public eye had for most of his career been outweighed by his in ring
performance.
It would come to pass finally that after his crowning
moment, before the eyes of not only all of Boston but the world, that
Mickey Showery the local name from Southie would KO Mohammed Jenkins at
The Boston Garden. That victory would seal his shot at a chance at the WBO
Super middleweight champion Roy Jones Jr. but the night of great joy also
came with hardship for Mickey. Father O’Donald lay on his deathbed, on the
loosing side of a long battle with Cancer.
As Father O’Donald
slowly passed on into the here after, Showery slowly sunk deeper into a
bottle. A week before the scheduled fight, in Atlantic City New Jersey,
Mickey Showery exited a night club after far too man cocktails hand had a
physical altercation with police officers.
Mickey Showery’s Title
shot was taken from him as one after another each of the gaming
commissions began to pull his boxing license. His Career as a Boxer was
finished.
The Underworld
Even though he was no
longer a Legal Sanctioned Fighter, Mickey was still a big draw in the
shadowed world of underground brawling. The Mafia run fight clubs would
play host to scores of has-beens and laid off workers from all walks of
life.
In back alleys and hidden basements men would take sport of
one another, in lawless blood stained rings under the dim light of
cigarettes and neon bar advertisements. Boxing, Wrestling, biting, and
clawing, there were no rules and it was a fight to submission.. or worse.
It was said of this enterprise that men, if hurting for the pay
bump, would fight with sticks and knives, perhaps even a man verses a pack
of dogs. This was not how Mickey Showery envisioned his life, however it
kept a handful of bills in his pocket and the occasional hot
meal.
Entrance into Wrestling
Mickey came across and
advertisement for an open try out for a local wrestling promotion. Feeling
that he had nothing to lose Mickey followed after the offer. Mickey would
be dealt a great amount of legitimate success in professional wrestling.
Sure he wasn’t the best technical wrestler, but when it came to fighting
and showmanship Mickey was a cut above the rest.
Having a nearly
perfect record with the promotion he returned to the public eye. Mickey
vowed to never return to his ways, the ways that ruined his first shot at
stardom and the public believed him. Professional Wrestling made Mickey
happy again, a happiness he hadn't felt since Father O’'onald had tutored
him in Boxing.
Mickey Showery received promotional offers, movie
deals, TV spots, and saw to it that his face was on the majority of the
products at your local mall or outlet. He had returned to the lime-light,
but how long could it really last?
Parts Unknown
As
had been the case time and time again, Mickey’s free mouth and strong
opinions pushed him aside from the group. Controversy once again began to
spin around him, from problems back stage with management, substance abuse
problems, as well as ties to the Mafia and Irish Republican
Army.
In just under a year, the promising Wrestling Superstar found
himself out of work and back to his humble roots in south Boston.
It was here that we lose track of Mickey Showery, it is known that
he left not only Boston but the Country. Reports have surfaced that he
landed somewhere in Eastern Europe where the old Soviet Block Countries
still employ the kind of Blood Sport Mickey Showery participated in the
past.
The Return
In March Mickey Showery popped back
onto the Radar apparently signing a contract with the Xtreme Dynasty
Federation. Although he doesn't seem to give us many clues as to where he
was in his hiatus from professional wrestling both he and the fans can
attest that its good to be
back.
